New Year’s Resolution: Live in the Page You’re On

Lean in, sweet friends.

I’d like to talk to you for a moment about my New Year’s Resolution.

I’ve got a book in mind.

Not surprising, right?
I am a writer after all.

But I don’t think this is just a writer thing.
I think you may have a book in mind too.
I think we all have them.
We’re all writing them.
The book of life and the way we see it playing out.

As the new year dawns, I think we all have an outline drawn up.

A storyboard.
Inspiration board.

In our minds, it’s complete with all kinds of planned chapters.

It likely ends with great health, great adventure, great success, and great love.

It’s beautiful and lovely.
But.
My resolution is not to seek the completion of the book.

I’m not even banking on a certain number of chapters.

My resolution is to sit in each scene as it’s written.

You see, we’re all aiming for the book.

Front to back.

Once upon a time…
Straight through to
…happily ever after.

But friends., that’s the book.

Not the story.

Of all the great books I’ve read, I rush through to find out how it ends, then find myself longing to go back and read it again. Take in each page, again.

Because the joy of every story lies within each scene.

So this year, I’m resolute in appreciating the scene I’m in.

To pause and look around room.

Notice the people sitting beside me.

Notice the lessons I’m learning here.

And take a moment to appreciate where I am, who I am, and what I have in this room.

In this scene.

On this page.

To ease back from the temptation of jumping to what’s next.

I know the page will turn eventually.

But unless I really indulge in each scene, I’ll miss out on the joy and adventure of the entire beautiful story.

So yes, I have a book in mind.

But right now, I’m ready to set aside the binding of a front to back cover and allow myself the freedom of living fully present on each blessed page.

♥️ Happy New Year!
